Are you looking for budget-friendly ways to work in Kuala Lumpur? Whether you’re a digital nomad, freelancer, or just need a change of scenery from your home office, there are plenty of options available in this vibrant city. In this article, we will explore a variety of budget-friendly places where you can work in Kuala Lumpur, including libraries, coworking spaces, work cafes, and even free spaces.
1. Libraries
Kuala Lumpur is home to several libraries that provide a quiet and conducive environment for work. They are the perfect place to go if you’re looking for free and quiet spaces. Here are a few notable options reachable by public transport:
Perpustakaan Kuala Lumpur (Kuala Lumpur Library)
The Kuala Lumpur Library is the main library of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Located in the heart of the city, this library offers a wide range of resources and facilities for researchers, freelancers, and students alike.
Nestled close to KL City Gallery and the iconic Dataran Merdeka, this exquisite library not only serves as an excellent workspace but also provides a convenient opportunity for exploration during your lunch break or after work hours.
Facilities include complimentary Wi-Fi for members, while non-members can avail themselves of Wi-Fi for RM2.00 per hour. Additionally, the library offers computer rentals, as well as printing and photocopying services at RM0.50 and RM0.20 per page for non-members, respectively.
More Information about KL Library:
- Public Transport: 2-min walk from Masjid Jamek LRT, 9-min walk from Bank Negara train station.
- Address: 1, Jln Raja, City Centre, 50050 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
- Opening Hours: Open on Tues to Fri (10am to 6.45pm), Sat and Sun (10am to 5pm), closed on Monday
- Do take note that KL Library is closed on Monday and Weekends (Sat and Sun) during the first week of the month.
- Closed on Public Holidays
Pustakaan Raja Tun Uda (Library)
Raja Tun Uda Library, also known as Perpustakaan Raja Tun Uda, is a modern six-story library with a beautiful view of a park and a lake, whose building concept is based on the idea of a “library in a park”. This is by far the most beautiful library I have been to in Malaysia.
The park behind the library features a lake, and its pathways are lined with trees and plants, each labeled with informative plaques, making a stroll through the area quite interesting.
In addition to its scenic surroundings, this well-equipped library provides excellent facilities, including spacious workstations (with great views of the lake and greeneries outside), a cafeteria, a popular children’s zone, and more!
Some highlights about Raja Tun Uda Library include:
- 3D theatre and multi-sensory 6D theatre
- Open-air cafeteria with views of the lake and the Blue Mosque (choices are limited, but the prices are very reasonable).
- Gymnasium with shower and changing rooms
- Window and Mac computers
- Scan and printing services
- Tables and Plug Points
You may view this page for more information about Raja Tun Ada Library and the charges for the services.
More Information about KL Library:
- Transport: The best way to get here is by driving. I wouldn’t recommend travelling here if this is the only destination as the distance from KL centre is quite far.
- Address: Jln Kelab Golf 13/6, Seksyen 13, 40100 Shah Alam, Selangor
- Opening Hours: Open on Monday (10am to 7pm), Tuesday – Friday (9.30am – 7pm), Sat and Sun (9.30am – 9pm), closed on Public Holidays
2. Coworking Spaces
If you prefer a more collaborative and social work environment, Kuala Lumpur has numerous coworking spaces to choose from. These spaces often provide amenities such as high-speed internet, meeting rooms, and networking opportunities. Here are a few popular options:
Common Ground
Common Ground has multiple offices setup across South East Asia, including Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand, which are the popular destinations for digital nomads and remote workers community. What’s amazing about Common Ground is that with their membership, you get to enjoy the space for an affordable price across multiple countries and cities.
WORQ
Known for its modern and stylish design, WORQ provides a range of flexible workspace options, including hot desks, dedicated desks, and private offices, starting from RM300 per month.
Different from Common Ground, WORQ workstations mainly located in Malaysia’s Klang Valley regions, including Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. You may find the co-working space nearest to you here.
3. Work Cafes
If you enjoy the ambiance of a cafe while working, Kuala Lumpur has several work-friendly cafes that offer free Wi-Fi and a relaxed atmosphere. In my opinion, working in a cafe is the most economic choice as we not only get a comfortable space to work (with free wifi), we also get to enjoy the local food and drinks. Here are a few recommendations:
First Step Coffee
When it comes to work cafes, First Step Coffee takes the lead! The spacious ambiance and lower weekday crowds make it an ideal spot, especially if you prefer a more secluded setting—opt for a seat nestled between the book racks for added privacy.
What sets this café apart is its pride in serving quality coffee. Despite being a non-coffee person myself, my partner and I are regular patrons drawn in by the delectable food offerings. While their menu may have limited options, we find ourselves visiting almost weekly, indulging our taste buds while tackling our work. I highly recommend trying their Tuna Sandwiches, Aglio Oglio, Carbonara Spaghetti, and Kimbab (First Step Coffee was launched in Jeong-Ja Dong, Korea in 2012, it is fascinating that they maintain a connection to their Korean roots by featuring Korean dishes on their menu). These dishes may appear simple, but the freshness of the ingredients and the unforgettable taste will leave a lasting impression.
(I’m not the best food photographer, but trust me, this taste like a chef kiss!)
The only downside of this cafe is that the internet gets unstable, so bring your luck with you!
Bean Brothers, KL
Known for its cozy ambiance and excellent brews, Bean Brothers has become a go-to destination for coffee enthusiasts and remote workers seeking a conducive environment to work or unwind. See here for the look-and-feel of the interior space.
Bean Brothers KL is located strategically in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. Located inside a trendy mall called The Linc, where you can find local artist selling handcrafts items and clothings. There is also a grocery store on the 1st floor if you want to do some shopping.
There is a huge tree right at the centre of the mall, which is quite interesting to see.
4. Free Spaces
If you’re on a tight budget, other than public libraries, there are also free spaces in Kuala Lumpur where you can work without spending a dime. Here are a few options:
- Public Parks: Kuala Lumpur is home to numerous parks, such as KLCC Park and Perdana Botanical Gardens, where you can find a peaceful spot to work amidst nature.
- Shopping Malls: Many shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur offer free Wi-Fi and comfortable seating areas, making them convenient places to work, especially during off-peak hours.
Conclusion
Working in Kuala Lumpur doesn’t have to break the bank. From libraries to coworking spaces, work cafes to free spaces, there are plenty of budget-friendly options available for you to choose from. Whether you prefer a quiet and focused environment or a more social and collaborative setting, Kuala Lumpur has something to offer for every type of remote worker. So go ahead, explore these options, and find your ideal workspace in this dynamic city.
